Allegations have surfaced against Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Israt Jahan Sony and Union Parishad Chairman Rezaul Karim Polton for embezzling funds allocated for the development of Kartikahar Hat in Adhaipur Union, Badalgachhi Upazila, Naogaon.
Locals reported that Kartikahar Hat is not a government-listed market and thus deprived of regular development, but funding had long been demanded. According to union parishad records, BDT 3,03,368 was spent in the 1431 BS fiscal year (with no specific work description provided), and BDT 3,20,625 was allocated in 1432 BS nominally for tiling tree bases.
However, local residents and club members alleged that only a few tree bases and an old club toilet were repaired at a minimal cost (around BDT 50,000), while the rest of the funds were embezzled and misappropriated. When questioned, responsible UP member Biplob Hossain shifted responsibility to the chairman and UNO. UP Chairman AKM Rezaul Karim Polton claimed the work is ongoing and denied any personal involvement in financial irregularities.
Meanwhile, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Israt Jahan Sony repeatedly refused to comment when contacted regarding the matter, sparking widespread public anger and sensation in the area.
