Begum Rokeya University Journalists' Association Celebrates 12th Anniversary with Grand Festivities
Begum Rokeya University Journalists' Association Celebrates 12th Anniversary with Grand Festivities

The Begum Rokeya University Journalists' Association (BRUJAS) celebrated its 12th anniversary with a series of grand events, including a discussion session, a vibrant rally, and a cake-cutting ceremony. Md. Kamrul Islam, Acting Editor of Dhaka Post, served as the keynote speaker.

Following a celebratory rally on campus on Monday (October 26) at 11:00 AM, a discussion session was held at the university cafeteria. Presided over by BRUJAS President Abu Sayeed, the event featured the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Shawkat Ali, as the chief guest, and the university’s Registrar (in-charge), Professor Dr. Md. Ferdous Rahman, as a special guest.

In his address, keynote speaker Md. Kamrul Islam cautioned journalists against acting more like politicians. He noted that in various talk shows, journalists often appear to play a more prominent political role than the politicians themselves—a behavior likely driven by the pursuit of personal gain. "There is no reason to act more like a politician unless one is seeking to benefit personally," he remarked.

He further questioned the circumstances surrounding recent mass uprisings, asking, "Why should the Khatib (head cleric) of a national mosque or the president and secretary of the National Press Club be forced to flee during a mass movement? Such occurrences are truly regrettable."

He added, "My point is that we must remain committed to integrity in our writing. We should strive to ensure that our work leaves a lasting impact—one that, even ten years from now, continues to contribute to positive change in our society, our nation, and this very campus."

Speaking as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shawkat Ali emphasized that a university serves as a hub for knowledge, reason, and free thought. In this context, the role of journalism should be to provide constructive criticism, fact-based analysis, and disseminate positive messages. He emphasized the importance of verifying the accuracy of information before publishing any news.

The Vice-Chancellor further noted that the university's reputation is often damaged when information is disseminated without proper verification. Therefore, in the interest of responsible journalism, the authenticity of all information must be confirmed prior to publication. He also highlighted various government initiatives aimed at the overall development of the university and the empowerment of the younger generation. He called upon all stakeholders to work collectively toward transforming the university into one of the nation's premier academic institutions.

Speakers at the event included Md. Tabiur Rahman Prodhan, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism; Kamruzzaman Pulak, General Secretary of BRobISAS (Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur Journalists' Association); and Farhaduzzaman Faruk, Rangpur Bureau Chief of Dhaka Post, among others.

Also present were Sushanta Bhowmik Subal, Acting Editor of the daily Mayabazar; Sarkar Mazharul Mannan, General Secretary of the Rangpur Journalists' Union; Humayun Kabir Manik, General Secretary of the City Press Club; Mominul Islam Ripon, President of the Bangladesh Photojournalists Association (Rangpur unit); Mokarram Hossain from Ekhon TV; Rezwan Roni from Kalbela; Rezaul Karim Jibon from Dhaka Mail; and Shipul Islam from Ajker Patrika. The event was attended by members of various university organizations, students, faculty, staff, journalists from different media outlets, and other relevant stakeholders.

It is worth noting that BRobISAS was established on October 26, 2014, through the initiative of a group of students. The organization began its journey with the objective of highlighting significant university events, presenting the challenges and potential of the campus to the public, and amplifying the voices of students on a broader platform. Over time, the campus environment, the technology used for news dissemination, and the nature of journalism have evolved. Throughout its 12-year journey, the organization has remained committed to its core mission: delivering objective news and giving a voice to the people.
