Police have uncovered the mystery behind the murder of schoolgirl Jannatul Tajmin (14) in Cumilla. Based on primary investigation and interrogation, police revealed that auto-rickshaw driver Sumon raped Tajmin before strangling her to death.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Pankaj Barua shared these details during a press conference held at the District Superintendent of Police's office on Saturday (October 10) at 10:30 AM.
According to the police narrative, on the night of October 8, Tajmin hired a CNG-driven auto-rickshaw in front of the Tisha Bus Counter in the Paduar Bazar Bishwa Road area to travel to her residence in Racecourse for a fare of BDT 300. Auto driver Sumon subsequently took her to a secluded area, where he raped and murdered her.
Police stated that after the murder, Sumon stole an iPhone from Tajmin's handbag, dumped the handbag in a paddy field, and fled the scene. He then washed himself in a pond near the Kachikata Mosque before taking another CNG-driven auto-rickshaw to the Bakhrabad area. After hiding the stolen iPhone in a jungle near a pond in that area, he escaped to Chattogram.
As part of the ongoing investigation, police arrested Sumon from Chattogram on October 9. Following his confession during interrogation, law enforcement officers recovered the hidden iPhone from the jungle near the pond in Bakhrabad.
Earlier on Thursday morning (October 8), police recovered Tajmin's body from a paddy field in Jagatpur village under Lalmai Upazila, Cumilla, and later identified her.
Tajmin was the daughter of Abdul Alim from Chhatiya Tala village in Yashore Sadar Upazila. She was a 7th-grade student at Farida Vidyayatan School in Cumilla city, though school authorities noted she had not been attending classes since February of this year. Her father, Abdul Alim, works for Renata Pharmaceuticals in the Cumilla region and resided with his family in a rented apartment in the Racecourse area of the city.
