A tense situation has arisen in Rangpur following conflicting allegations of vandalism, occupation, and counter-occupation regarding the Rangpur Lions Club office located on the premises of Lions School and College. Both rival factions have lodged formal complaints at the local police station and held separate press conferences to air their claims. To maintain law and order and protect the educational environment, the Rangpur Metropolitan Police has issued a public notice imposing restrictions on entry to the institution.
On Monday morning (October 12, 2026), Enamul Haque Sohel, president of the governing body of Lions School and College, held a press conference at a hotel auditorium in Rangpur city. He alleged that on October 10, outsiders broke into the school and college premises, created chaos, and assaulted the security in-charge, with CCTV footage of the incident circulating on social media. Other club organizers, including Manzil Murad Lavlu, Baniul Adam, and Shariful Islam Babu, were present at the briefing, demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits.
Conversely, Lions Club President Farid Ahmed Rumi convened a separate press conference in the afternoon, bringing forth severe counter-allegations against Enamul Haque Sohel. Rumi accused Sohel of committing widespread corruption and embezzling crores of taka while serving as the convener of the institution's infrastructure construction committee. The allegations include financial irregularities in land purchases, tax evasions, arbitrary withdrawal of funds for building and elevator construction without proper tenders or estimates, and corruption in staff recruitments. Club director Nazmul Alam Naju and secretary Aklakul Islam, among others, attended this press conference.
The confrontation escalated on October 10 at around 4:30 PM when Farid Ahmed Rumi’s faction allegedly broke the lock of the Lions Club office and installed a new one, only for Enamul Haque Sohel's group to counter-attack shortly after, breaking the new lock and reoccupying the premises. In response to the escalating conflict, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahbubur Rashid announced a strict public notice restricting entry to the school to authorized teachers, students, and staff only, warning of stern legal action against violators.
