With the onset of the winter season, traditional date palm extractors—locally known as Gachhis—in Atghoria, Pabna, are working around the clock to clean and trim date palm trees for sap collection. A friendly competition has begun among local extractors to see who can gather the season's first batch of fresh sap.
Armed with sickles and securing ropes, extractors are skillfully shaving tree trunks and installing bamboo spouts. Date palm sap and the resulting Nolen Gur (date palm jaggery) serve as essential ingredients for traditional winter delicacies across rural Bangladesh. Atghoria Upazila Agriculture Officer Khabirid Mahmuda Motmainna stated that the agriculture department is providing technical guidance to ensure extractors collect sap and produce jaggery under hygienic conditions, offering vital seasonal livelihoods for hundreds of local families.
