Despite ongoing drives by the upazila administration to protect jatka (juvenile hilsa) and mother hilsa in Betagi, Barguna, allegations have surfaced that individuals positioned along both banks of the river are signaling using torches.
It has been reported that certain local shopkeepers and buyers are supplying information regarding when the raiding team departs the river and which direction they head.
The administration stated that complying with the 21-22 day ban is vital to ensuring the breeding and proliferation of hilsa. If hilsa are denied the opportunity to spawn, fish production will decline in the future. Violating the ban by catching, purchasing, or obstructing operations poses a severe threat to the nation's fisheries resources.
The Betagi administration further warned that necessary steps will be taken to cancel the fishing licenses of any fishermen found involved. An appeal has been issued to everyone to abide by the ban for the sake of hilsa production and future generations.
