In Sherpur’s Sreebordi upazila, the body of a 60-year-old elderly man named Abdul Karim was buried inside his living room because his family lacked any personal land for burial. This shocking incident occurred on Monday (October 26) morning in the Shalmara area under Tatihati union.
Abdul Karim was the son of the late Shamsher Ali of Shalmara village. Family and local sources stated that Abdul Karim owns no landed property other than his homestead. As there is no public cemetery in Shalmara village apart from family graveyards, families without a private burial ground face severe distress. Since Abdul Karim had no land other than his dwelling house, he was perforce buried inside his living room.
Masud Mia, a resident of Shalmara village, mentioned that although they have long demanded a public cemetery in Shalmara village from public representatives and civil society, no one stepped forward.
The deceased's daughters, Korfuli and Rikta Parveen, stated, "We have no land other than our homestead, so we were forced to bury our father inside the house.
However, a public cemetery should be established in the area so that no one else has to face such a situation." Advocate Abdur Rouf, Chairman of Tatihati Union Parishad, and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monisha Ahmed stated that upon learning of the matter, steps are being taken to relocate the body to the nearby Shaitkakra public cemetery on Tuesday.
