A female worker (33) from Ulipur, Kurigram, was allegedly gang-raped after being lured to an Urs mahfil in Birahimpur village, Mithapukur upazila, Rangpur, on the evening of September 22. According to the victim and police, Md. Hanif Mia (54) and Md. Kashem Ali alias Kasu (59) invited her to the event before taking her to Hanif's house and forcefully assaulting her. While locals rushed to the scene and caught Hanif red-handed while Kashem and others fled, police arrived and brought the victim and Hanif to the station.
Although 6 to 7 individuals were reportedly involved directly in the heinous crime, a case was filed naming only two suspects without any unnamed entries. The victim tearfully claimed that she signed a prepared statement under pressure from local brokers who allegedly extorted money from the remaining perpetrators to keep them out of the legal process. Mithapukur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Hafizur Rahman stated that the case was filed based on the victim's written complaint and statement, both suspects have been arrested, and police will investigate if anyone else was involved.
