
Abdul Bari Dulal, Gangachara correspondent for Daily Lakhokontho and Daily Protidiner Barta and Vice-President of Gangachara Upazila Press Club, was severely beaten and injured in a targeted murder attempt on Friday evening (October 2) in the Omar area of Gajghanta union, Gangachara upazila, Rangpur. The attack stemmed from news coverage detailing an anti-illegal sand mining drive conducted on September 30 by Gangachara Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Hamidur Islam, which resulted in fines and bonds for violators. Perpetrators Kamruজ্জামান and Amanuzzaman Aman, sons of local sand trader Golazar Hossain, along with associates, ambushed Dulal at the Gajghanta Omar Bazar at around 7:30 PM, striking him on the head with intent to kill.
Following the incident, numerous journalistic bodies—including RPUJ, Gangachara Upazila Press Club, Gangachara Press Club, and Rangpur Press Club—strongly condemned the assault and demanded swift legal action. Local leaders, including Daily Protidiner Barta Executive Editor and Kolkoন্দ Union BNP General Secretary Jalal Hossain, Rangpur District Juba Dal Member and Gangachara Upazila Senior Vice-President Shamim Mia, Gangachara Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdus Sobur, Islami Andolan leaders, and MP Raihan Siraji, rushed to the hospital to visit the injured journalist. Gangachara Model Police Station OC Abdus Sobur confirmed that steps are underway to apprehend the culprits.
