Demands for establishing a new Sadar hospital and a district-level general hospital in Rangpur are escalating rapidly to improve healthcare quality, reduce patient suffering, and ensure accessible medical services. Established in 1930, the 96-year-old Sadar hospital building has long been abandoned and reduced to a hazardous, dilapidated structure, turning into a breeding ground for drug abusers and a haunting site. Despite multiple letters sent by the Civil Surgeon's office and local administration to the Ministry of Health urging a resolution, no effective steps have been taken yet.
With no new public hospital built in the district over the past five decades, the Rangpur Medical College (RMCH) Hospital remains the sole destination for healthcare seekers. Consequently, the 1000-bed hospital is routinely overwhelmed with nearly three times its capacity of patients every day. While 2,000 to 3,000 outpatients and 2,500 to 3,500 inpatients seek care daily, the facility operates with a manpower meant for only 650 beds. Overworked doctors and nurses struggle constantly under the immense pressure of severe overcrowding and a chronic staff shortage.
Furthermore, because RMCH is located on the western edge of the city, severe traffic congestion often delays critical patients arriving from remote upazilas, frequently worsening their conditions en route. To address this crisis, the Rangpur Civil Surgeon officially proposed building a 250-bed hospital in Sadar upazila to the Directorate General of Health Services, and the matter was also raised at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference.
Local civil society representatives, including Rangpur Metropolitan Citizens Committee Member Secretary Advocate Palash Kanti Nag and Sujon district president Khandaker Fakhrul Anam Benju, have strongly urged immediate government intervention to build a new general hospital or renovate the legacy facility. Rangpur Civil Surgeon Dr. Shaheen Sultana and Divisional Health Assistant Director Dr. Md. Meshkatul Abed echoed these urgent calls, emphasizing that a major regional Sadar hospital is indispensable for the healthcare needs of the people of northern Bangladesh.
