Prices of various local and imported fruits have skyrocketed in the markets of Amtali, Barguna, placing them far beyond the reach of ordinary consumers. According to local traders, oranges are currently being sold at Tk 550 per kg, malta at Tk 480 to Tk 500, apples at Tk 350 to Tk 400, grapes at Tk 450, and pomegranate (bedana) at Tk 450 to Tk 500 per kg. Additionally, green coconuts (dab) are selling for Tk 100 to Tk 150 per piece, ripe papaya at Tk 60 to Tk 80, dragon fruit at Tk 140 to Tk 160, and guava at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg. Locally produced malta is priced at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg, while Katimon mangoes and watermelons are selling for Tk 200 and Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg respectively.
Traders stated that fruit prices are higher this year because they have to purchase them at higher rates from wholesale markets, noting that high prices often lead to unsold rotting stock and losses. A frustrated buyer, Md. Nasir Uddin, expressed that prices are completely disproportionate to common people's incomes. In response to the situation, Amtali Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Mobile Court Magistrate Hasan Md. Hafizur Rahman stated that legal action through mobile courts will be taken if consumers are overcharged.
