The Maha Ashtami celebrations of Sharadiya Durga Puja in Rangpur drew massive crowds, centered around the traditional Kumari Puja held at the Mahiganj Ramakrishna Mission and Ashram. On Monday morning (October 19, 2026), 4-year-three-month-old Arundhati Bagchi from Bogura was seated on a throne and worshipped in the form of a Kumari in front of the idol of Goddess Durga.
Accompanied by the beating of drums and sacred chants, the nearly hour-long ritual saw devotees offer flowers, Anjali, and prayers for the welfare of the country and its people. The rituals were conducted by priest Krishna Jha of the Ramakrishna Mission, followed by the distribution of Prasad among the devotees.
Devotees and organizers noted that according to Hindu scriptures, young virgin girls embody the pure and living reflection of Goddess Mahamaya, whose worship helps dispel evil forces, brings peace and prosperity, and reinforces respect and dignity for women in society. Dr. Ajay Kumar Roy, President of the Ramakrishna Mission, highlighted the festive and peaceful environment surrounding the celebration.
