Teachers, students, and people from various professions in Shariatpur formed a human chain and submitted a memorandum demanding the establishment of Shariatpur Agricultural University at its pre-determined location near the district town. On Tuesday (October 27) around 11:00 AM, the human chain was organized under the banner of 'Jago Shariatpur' on the Shariatpur-Dhaka highway adjacent to the central Shahid Minar in the district town, drawing participants from Sadar, Naria, Jajira, and other upazilas across the district.
Speakers at the human chain stated that Shariatpur Agricultural University is a long-cherished aspiration of the district's people. Establishing the university will expand higher education opportunities while creating new prospects for agricultural research and regional economic development. Therefore, considering necessary facilities including student transit, housing, healthcare, and security, establishing the university campus at the pre-determined location beside the Shariatpur-Dhaka highway near the district town is imperative.
Speakers further noted that since the newly proposed site for the university is in a remote char area bordering Damudya and Gosairhat upazilas, ensuring commuting and essential civic facilities for students, teachers, and related personnel could prove difficult. Hence, prioritizing regional connectivity, civic amenities, and long-term development over any specific area's interests should determine the university's site.
Amin Mahmud Jitu, Convener of 'Jago Shariatpur', stated in the human chain that establishing an agricultural university in Shariatpur had been a long-standing demand, in response to which initiatives were undertaken. When discussing university establishment, a location across the Kotapara Bridge adjacent to Shariatpur Sadar was designated, keeping student transit, housing, and overall considerations in view.
He added, "Lately, we hear that the university will be established in Damudya, far from Shariatpur Sadar, where students would face various problems. We want Shariatpur Agricultural University established at a convenient location near the district headquarters."
Following the human chain, a memorandum was submitted to relevant authorities demanding the university's establishment at its pre-determined location.
