Human Chain Held in Amtali Demanding Removal of Dangerous Khekkani Bridge and Construction of New One
Over 500 local residents forming a human chain near Khekkani Market in Amtali, Barguna, demanding a new bridge.

Local residents formed a human chain demanding the removal of the hazardous Khekkani Bridge in No. 1 Gulishakhali Union of Amtali Upazila, Barguna, and the urgent construction of a new bridge in its place.

Over 500 local residents participated in the hour-long human chain held on Friday (October 30) at 10:30 AM near the market on the west side of the bridge.

The event was addressed by former Joint Convener of Amtali Upazila BNP Tofazzal Hossain Mia, prominent social worker of Gulishakhali Union Golam Mostafa, Union BNP Joint Convener Delowar Hossain Munshi, and Barguna District Jubo Dal Secretary Asaduzzaman Momen Akon, alongside local dignitaries from No. 1 Gulishakhali Union.

During the demonstration, speakers emphasized that the bridge—which serves as the sole transit route for nearly 50,000 people—has remained extremely hazardous for a long time. Heavy vehicles are completely unable to cross it, subjecting traders and residents to immense suffering. Speakers pointed out that during a recent market fire, nearly 12 shops were gutted before their eyes as fire service vehicles could not cross the bridge. Even ambulances cannot traverse the structure. The demonstrators voiced their core demand for the immediate removal of the dangerous bridge and the swift construction of a new one.
