Police Inspector General (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir has stated that when the police use force to maintain law and order, they are labeled as fascist, and when they do not use force, people consider them weak. He made these remarks while speaking to journalists after a community policing civic rally for the Khulna division at the Boyra Police Lines in Khulna.
The IGP noted that a distance has been created between the police and the public over the last 17 years, and drugs have been deeply entrenched in society. The police are actively working to overcome this situation. He mentioned that a legal framework is being formulated with the approval of the Ministries of Home Affairs and Finance to make law enforcement agencies more effective, through which community policing will function as a branch of the police.
Furthermore, the IGP stated that nationwide joint operations are underway to control teenage gangs, extortion, and drugs. Additionally, initiatives are being taken to enact a new law empowering the police to file suo motu (self-initiated) cases for extortion even without public complaints.
