In a heartbreaking turn of events, an elderly and ailing mother filed a written complaint with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) seeking shelter in her son's home, only to be met with severe resistance from her only son, who threatened to end his life rather than live under the same roof with her.The complainant, Munni Khatun (50), lost her husband, Sirajul Islam, years ago. With her daughter married off, her son, Sagar Hossain (30)—a village police member serving at Nagdemra Union Parishad under Santhia Upazila in Pabna—remains her sole provider and pillar of support. However, family disputes flared up after Sagar’s marriage, leading him to stop providing regular financial support and refuse her a place in his household. After local village leaders failed to resolve the ongoing dispute, Munni Khatun turned to Santhia UNO Selim Ahmed, pleading for shelter and care during her final years due to her ailing health and heart condition.During a formal hearing held on Thursday afternoon (October 8) at the Santhia UNO office, UNO Selim Ahmed repeatedly reasoned with Sagar, urging him on compassionate and moral grounds to accommodate his ailing mother. However, Sagar remained steadfast in his refusal. "I cannot keep my mother with me," Sagar declared during the hearing. "Sir, just tell me how much money I need to send her monthly. If you force me to live with her, I will commit suicide."Desperate for shelter rather than money, Munni Khatun expressed her plea: "My husband passed away long ago, and my daughter is married. I am a heart patient. Who else do I have besides my son? I don't want his money. Even if it's just basic salt and rice, I want to live in my son's house with a mother's right. That is my only wish."Nagdemra Union Parishad Chairman Hafizul Islam noted that local arbitration attempts had collapsed due to the son's stubborn refusal. UNO Selim Ahmed stated that he has given Sagar a few days to reconsider and find an amicable solution, warning that further legal measures will follow if he fails to comply.
