Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists participate in a protest march and rally in Sreepur, Gazipur, on October 28, demanding an impartial investigation into the October 28, 2006, violence in Dhaka’s Paltan area.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami held a protest march and rally in Sreepur, Gazipur, on Wednesday, October 28, demanding a fair investigation into the violence and deaths that occurred in Dhaka’s Paltan area on October 28, 2006, and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

The programme was jointly organised by the Sreepur upazila and municipal units of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The protest began at around 4:30 pm from the Sreepur Railway Gate area. A large procession marched through the main roads of the upazila before concluding with a brief rally in front of the Upazila Parishad.

The rally was presided over by Maulana Jahangir Kabir, amir of Sreepur Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami. Principal Abul Kalam Azad, the party-nominated candidate for the upazila parishad vice-chairman post, moderated the programme. Principal Mostafizur Rahman Khan, Jamaat-e-Islami’s nominated candidate for Sreepur Upazila Parishad chairman, addressed the gathering as the chief guest.

Speaking at the rally, Principal Mostafizur Rahman Khan called for a fair and impartial investigation into the violence and loss of life during the October 28, 2006, incident in Paltan, which involved sticks and boat oars, commonly referred to as “logi-baitha.”

He urged the authorities to identify those responsible through an impartial investigation and bring them to justice without delay. He also stressed that ensuring justice for all acts of political violence was essential to establishing the rule of law in the country.

Other speakers condemned the violence of October 28, 2006, and emphasised the need for a proper investigation into past incidents of political violence.

A large number of leaders, activists and supporters from the Sreepur upazila and municipal units of Jamaat-e-Islami attended the programme and demanded justice for those killed in the 2006 incident.
