A native Indian Roofed Turtle was rescued from the Kanashakhola Bazar area in Sherpur Sadar Upazila and subsequently released into a natural waterbody. On Saturday night (October 24), Ayesha Siddika Risha, daughter of journalist Aminul Islam Raju, spotted the turtle on the road leading to their home and brought it inside.

Upon being informed by journalist Raju, Wildlife Ranger Md. Abdullah Al Amin from the Sherpur Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department, along with Sherpur Bird Club Founder President and environmental organization 'Shine' Executive Director Md. Moghniur Rahman Moni, rushed to the spot and safely released the turtle into a nearby waterbody. Wildlife Ranger Md. Abdullah Al Amin explained that the rescued turtle is scientifically known as the Indian Roofed Turtle, also called Batagur.

These semi-aquatic creatures are diurnal, slow-moving, and frequently bask in the sun on floating logs. They are omnivorous, feeding on aquatic plants like water hyacinths and weeds, as well as crabs and snails.

Although once common in calm or slow-flowing waters rich in vegetation, their numbers have significantly declined, underscoring the need for public cooperation in wildlife conservation to maintain ecological balance.
