The newly elected full committee of the Patiya Press Club for the 2026–2028 term has taken its oath. Newly elected President Abdul Hakim Rana (Daily Kalbela, Bijoy TV and Daily Chattogram Mancha) and General Secretary Shafiul Azam (Daily Azadi, Protidiner Bangladesh and Chattogram Post), along with other executive committee leaders, took the oath.
The oath-taking ceremony was held last Monday evening at the Patiya Club auditorium. Chief Election Commissioner Advocate A.K.M. Shahjahan Uddin administered the oath to the newly elected committee officials and members. Election Commissioners Abul Hossain and Professor Bhagirath Das were also present.
The other officials who took the oath are Senior Vice-President Abdur Razzak (Daily Prothom Alo), Senior Joint Secretary Ahmad Ullah (Daily Samakal), Joint Secretary Farukur Rahman Binju (Daily Amader Arthaniti), Finance Secretary Rabiul Alam Choton (Daily Purbokone), Literature and Cultural Secretary Sujit Dutta (Daily Amader Shomoy), Publicity and Publication Secretary S.M. Rahman (Daily Naya Diganta), Sports and Hospitality Secretary Obaidul Haque Piblu (Cplus TV and Daily Bangladesh Bulletin), Information Technology Secretary Kawsar Alam (Daily Kaler Kantho and Daily Purbodesh), and Office Secretary Kamrul Islam (Daily Ajkaler Khobor and Dakshin Chattala). S.M.A.K. Jahangir (Bhorer Kagoj), S.M. Jewel (Daily Amar Barta and 71 Online News), and Abdullah Al Noman (Protidiner Kagoj and Shomoyer Kagoj) took the oath as executive members.
Speakers at the event said that maintaining mutual unity, cooperation and professionalism is essential for journalists to perform their professional duties. They emphasized the need to work collectively to ensure journalists’ professional rights, dignity and welfare, alongside practicing objective and responsible journalism.
The speakers further said that the Patiya Press Club, established in 1977, has long been operating in accordance with its own traditions and constitution. They expressed hope that the newly elected committee would further strengthen the club’s institutional activities while upholding the dignity of its oath and play an effective role in protecting journalists’ rights and professional dignity.
It may be noted that although the results for most executive committee positions were determined in the election held in December 2024, the election for the general secretary’s post was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. As a result, the oath-taking process of the full committee remained pending for a long time. Later, the Election Commission conducted a revised re-election for the postponed general secretary’s post and declared Shafiul Azam the winner. This brought an end to the long wait and paved the way for the full committee to formally assume office.
Following the oath-taking ceremony, the first meeting of the newly elected committee was held. At the meeting, the committee leaders expressed their firm commitment to further strengthening the club’s organizational structure and working collectively to protect journalists’ welfare, rights and professional dignity.
