The number of dengue patients has increased alongside general admissions at the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex in Rangpur, stretching hospital staff to their limits as patients spill over onto floors and corridors due to a severe bed shortage. According to official sources, the 50-bed health center had 95 patients admitted as of Saturday afternoon, including 11 dengue patients (5 men and 6 women). Many of the infected individuals, such as Tofela Begum and Baharul from Sorlia village, as well as Rakhini, Abdur Rouf, and Jim from Sujar Kuthi, contracted the virus while staying in Dhaka or Gazipur before returning home.
Hospital Resident Medical Officer Dr. Tarikul Islam noted that 8 out of the 11 hospitalized dengue patients caught the virus outside the district, adding that the facility is maintaining medical services to the best of its ability despite the overwhelming patient load. The shortage of beds has caused delays in prompt treatment and created significant challenges for doctors and healthcare workers managing the influx.
