More than fifty people, including women and children, sustained injuries after being bitten by a rabid stray dog in Sherpur.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (November 3) morning across several villages, including Sapmari in Bhatshala union and Krishnapur Daripara in Lachmanpur union under Sadar upazila. The sudden and aggressive rampage by the rabid dog has sparked widespread panic throughout the area.
According to reports, the stray dog suddenly began running amok in Sapmari, Krishnapur Daripara, and surrounding areas starting Tuesday morning. The animal bit and scratched virtually everyone it encountered before fleeing. Following the attacks, the injured individuals were rescued and rushed to the district Sadar hospital. By 1:30 PM on Tuesday, 48 individuals bitten by the dog had received treatment at the district Sadar hospital. Among them, three individuals in critical condition have been admitted for ongoing care. They are Bahej Uddin (70) from Sapmari area, Mamun (32) from Krishnapur Daripara, and Abul Hossain (50) from Sheripara area.
A visit to the hospital revealed that patients bleeding with bite and scratch wounds had their injuries washed with soap and water before being promptly administered anti-rabies vaccines. However, due to a manpower shortage, a single nurse was administering the vaccines, causing delays that led to heated arguments between patients and Ansar members managing the queues.

Abdul Alim, a relative of a four-year-old child who came for treatment, said, "A dog bit my child at 6:00 AM, and we arrived here at 7:00 AM. It is past 11:00 AM, yet we still haven't received the vaccine. Moreover, the Ansar members keep pushing us outside every now and then."
Echoing a similar complaint, a relative of another patient named Md. Rokan stated, "My daughter was standing quietly in front of the house when the dog suddenly came from behind and scratched her back. Getting the vaccine here is taking an extremely long time."
Sekandar Ali, a resident of Krishnapur Daripara village, remarked, "If the dog is not identified, caught, or brought under control immediately, movement for villagers—especially school-going children and farmers—will become unsafe."
Meanwhile, Dr. AKM Mahmudul Hasan Sohag, Assistant Registrar of the hospital, stated that all 48 injured individuals were vaccinated and that the hospital has an adequate stock of vaccines. He said, "From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 48 patients attacked by the rabid dog were given primary treatment and vaccines. Three of them have been admitted to the hospital, while the rest were discharged after treatment. There is an ample supply of vaccines in the hospital."
Dr. Sajjad Hossain, Superintendent of the Sherpur 250-Bed District Sadar Hospital, stated, "Government-provided vaccines are being administered free of cost to everyone. We are facing a manpower shortage, which is why the queue became a bit long. However, everyone has been successfully vaccinated."
