Police in Chittagong have arrested three members of an inter-district robbery gang during an overnight drive while they were allegedly preparing to commit highway robbery on the Baraiyarhat-Khagrachhari regional highway.
The drive was executed on Thursday night (October 1, 2026) in the Geramara area under Korerhat Union in Jorarganj, according to Chittagong District Superintendent of Police (SP) Md. Masud Alam. The arrestees were identified as Md. Anwar Hossain (23), Belayet Hossain (30), and Md. Alauddin alias Mamun (36). Officers recovered four daggers, one long machete (ramda), and seven black face masks during the operation. Police noted that night patrols and targeted surveillance had been intensified along the Nayatila to Koyla Bazar stretch following recent reports of criminal activity targeting highway commuters and drivers. SP Masud Alam confirmed that a group of 14 to 15 masked individuals attempted to flee into dense vegetation upon spotting law enforcement, with officers apprehending three suspects while the remainder escaped into the dark. Primary interrogations revealed that the gang gathered with weapons to ambush passing vehicles, with suspect Alauddin holding a prior record of multiple robbery, drug, and weapons charges across Jorarganj and CMP's Bayezid Bostami Police Stations.
