Significant progress has been made in the commissioning activities of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. On Wednesday (September 30) morning, testing of the Pressure Operated Relief Valve (PORV) was successfully completed under a high pressure of 16 megapascals (MPa).

Dr. Zahedul Hassan, Managing Director of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), confirmed on Thursday (October 1) morning that the PORV issues have been resolved. The tests, which began Tuesday night and ran through Wednesday night, were conducted from both the main control room and the emergency control room. Satisfactory performance was observed in the control valves, as well as the response, opening, closing, alarms, and procedural parameters of the associated Main Safety Valves (MSVs).

The testing adhered strictly to approved procedures and safety guidelines. The successful completion of this phase marks a major milestone, as the system directly regulates safe pressure within the reactor's primary system. The next testing phase at approximately 18 MPa is set to take place shortly.

Meanwhile, nuclear fuel (uranium) for the second unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday (October 1). Russian contractor Rosatom stated that fuel delivery for Unit 2 will continue through December 2026 across multiple shipments. Under tight security arrangements, the first batch of fuel for the second unit will be transported by road to the project site in Ishwardi, Pabna.
