A severe disaster in pass rates has occurred across colleges in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur in the recently published Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) Examination 2026 results. Amid the downward trend of overall results nationwide, this academic debacle in Pirganj has deeply concerned local guardians, teachers, and conscious citizens.
According to various related sources, a total of 2,013 students from 14 colleges in Pirganj upazila participated in the HSC examinations this year. Among them, only 768 students successfully passed, while 1,245 students failed. Across all colleges, only 17 students achieved GPA-5, bringing the overall upazila pass rate down to just 38 percent.
Amidst this gloomy picture of overall failure, three educational institutions showed a glimmer of hope. Among them, the top-performing local institution, Shah Abdur Rouf Government College, had 212 successful students out of 324 examinees, with 3 achieving GPA-5. Pirganj Mohila College had 126 successful students out of 205, with 5 getting GPA-5, and Vendabari Mohila College saw 59 successful students out of 103, with 5 achieving GPA-5. These three colleges performed comparatively better than the rest. Conversely, none of the 15 students from Kadirabad Mohila College passed, and the results of other institutions were even more fragile.

According to them, the lack of regular classes, proper supervision by educational institutions, and apathy among parents and students have driven the pass rate down so drastically.
Regarding this matter, Pirganj Upazila Secondary Education Officer Abdur Rahman stated on Monday that studies are not taking place as expected in the colleges, which led to this consequence.
Professor Md. Golam Majed, Director of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Rangpur, said in a phone conversation on Monday, "This has also made us think deeply. We are investigating the reasons behind the disaster in results, and urgent steps will be taken to identify colleges with excessively low pass rates, improve the educational environment, and enhance the quality of teaching."
