Ayesha Siddika Risha, daughter of journalist Aminul Islam Raju, has been rewarded by Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin for rescuing a native tortoise (Kori Kaitta) from the Kanakhola Bazar area of Sherpur Sadar Upazila.
The award was presented on Monday afternoon (October 26) at the Deputy Commissioner's office.
Md. Mugniur Rahman Moni, founding president of the Sherpur Bird Club, executive director of the nature and environmental organization Shine, and senior journalist, said that the praise and award given by the eco-friendly, nature-loving, and humane Deputy Commissioner for Risha's noble act will inspire everyone to come forward in such good deeds. Everyone concerned should always stand by such good works according to their ability. Step by step, we will reach our goal one day.
The friend of life, nature, and the environment, along with being a humane Deputy Commissioner, Farida Yasmin stated, "A small child like Risha lives inside me too. Let children like Risha become our inspiration. May many more children like Risha be born in society. Eighth-grade student Risha's love, responsibility, and awareness towards life and nature have deeply touched and amazed me. Although Risha deserves a much bigger award, we have limitations. Nonetheless, to encourage her and everyone else in society to show love and empathy toward life and nature, we called her in, praised her work, and gave her a small token of appreciation. Doing this made us very glad."
Notably, on the night of Saturday, October 24, Risha spotted the native tortoise on her way home, rescued it, and brought it to her house. Later, Risha's father, journalist Raju, informed officials from the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department as well as environmental organizations, who arrived at the scene and released the tortoise into a body of water.
