Ayesha Siddika Risha, an eighth-grade student and daughter of journalist Aminul Islam Raju, has been rewarded by Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Farida Yasmin for rescuing a native crowned river turtle (Kori Kaitta) from the Kanakhola Bazar area in Sherpur Sadar upazila.

The award was presented to her on Monday afternoon (October 26) at the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Md. Mugniur Rahman Moni, founder president of the Sherpur Bird Club and executive director of the nature and environmental organization Shine, said, “The praise and award given by the environment-friendly and humane Deputy Commissioner for Risha’s noble act will encourage everyone to come forward in such good works. Relevant people should always stand by such good deeds within their means. Step by step, we will reach our goal one day.”

Farida Yasmin, the humane Deputy Commissioner and a friend of life, nature, and the environment, remarked, “There is also a little child like Risha living inside me. May children like Risha become our inspiration. May many more children like Risha be born in society. Eighth-grader Risha’s love, responsibility, and sense of awareness toward life and nature have deeply touched and amazed me. Although Risha is deserving of an even bigger award, we have our limitations. Nonetheless, to encourage her and everyone else in society regarding love and empathy for life and nature, we called her in, praised her work, and are glad to be able to present her with a small token of recognition.”

Notably, on the night of Saturday, October 24, Risha spotted the native turtle on her way home and rescued it, bringing it to her house. Later, when Risha’s father, journalist Raju, informed officials from the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department along with environmental activists, they arrived at the scene and safely released the turtle into a water body.
