In a harrowing incident of domestic cruelty in Mymensingh’s Gouripur upazila, a step-mother named Aklima Khatun (24) allegedly poisoned her co-wife’s two-and-a-half-year-old child, Waskuruni Islam, by forcing liquid pesticide down his throat to eliminate future family disputes.

Following his death during treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital after being rescued by his grandmother on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), the victim's biological mother, Shefali Akhter, filed a murder case at Gouripur police station on Thursday.

Police subsequently arrested both Aklima and the victim's father, Abdul Kadir, on suspicion of abetment. On Friday (October 9), Aklima confessed to the gruesome crime in a voluntary 164 statement before Senior Judicial Magistrate Tahmina Akhter Toma of Mymensingh 4th Cognizance Court, detailing how she seized an opportune moment when the house was empty to administer the lethal pesticide.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Gouripur Circle) Debashish Karmakar confirmed the development as legal proceedings continue against the accused.
