Anti-Adulteration Drive in Chandanaish: Shahjalal Bakery Fined BDT 60,000, Chemicals Worth BDT 16,000 Seized and Illegal Structures Evicted
UNO Md. Abdur Rahman inspects harmful chemicals seized from Shahjalal Bakery during an anti-adulteration drive in Chandanaish Municipality market.

In an effort to ensure safe food, a mobile court operation in Chandanaish, Chattogram, fined a bakery BDT 60,000. Additionally, a large quantity of harmful chemicals was seized and illegal structures on the footpaths were evicted during the drive.

The operation was conducted from Saturday morning to noon (October 10) in the Chandanaish Municipality market area, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Md. Abdur Rahman.

According to administrative sources, Shahjalal Bakery, located in the municipality's central market, had long been producing food under unhygienic conditions. During the drive, officials discovered that the bakery was using ammonia, along with banned artificial colors and flavors that pose serious health risks. Consequently, under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, the bakery management was fined BDT 60,000, and harmful chemicals valued at approximately BDT 16,000 were seized and immediately destroyed.

The drive also revealed that the bakery was unlawfully using a residential electricity meter for commercial purposes. In response to this violation, the electric connection was disconnected.

Meanwhile, as part of the same operation, illegal structures occupying the footpaths on both sides of the main road in Chandanaish market were evicted, significantly reducing traffic congestion and restoring normal pedestrian movement.

Regarding the drive, UNO Md. Abdur Rahman stated, "Ensuring safe food is our top priority. Our operations against adulteration and food mixed with harmful chemicals will continue. Furthermore, regular drives will be conducted in the public interest to keep footpaths free from illegal occupation."

Officials from the upazila administration, along with members of the local police and Ansar forces, were present during the drive.
