A teacher at Khepupara Government Model Secondary School in Kalapara, Patuakhali, has been accused of physically assaulting an 11-year-old student with a cane after the child shouted in pain during a classroom lesson.
The incident reportedly occurred around noon on October 27, 2026, inside a sixth-grade classroom while a science lesson was underway. The student, identified as Arefin Siddiqui, reportedly became ill after returning home following the alleged assault and was admitted to a hospital by his family.
Arefin is a sixth-grade student at the school and the son of Alamgir Hossain, an assistant professor at Kalapara Mahila Degree College.
According to the student's father, Arefin was injured in the leg after falling during class and cried out loudly in pain. At that point, Rashed, a part-time teacher at the institution, allegedly entered the classroom and beat the child repeatedly with a cane without first asking what had happened.
The father claimed that the beating left cuts and bleeding on parts of his son's body, along with swelling and other injuries. He said he subsequently raised the matter with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), who called the part-time teacher in connection with the complaint.
However, the father said he could not confirm whether any disciplinary action had been taken against the teacher.
Classmates of the injured student supported the account that Arefin had shouted after falling and hurting his leg. They alleged that the teacher immediately began beating him without asking for an explanation.
Attempts to contact the accused teacher were unsuccessful. His wife answered the phone and said that Rashed did not use a phone, preventing the collection of his response to the allegations.
Abdur Rahim, headteacher of Khepupara Government Model Secondary School, said the matter had been brought before the UNO but declined to comment further.
Kalapara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Arifuzzaman said both parties had appeared before him regarding the incident. He added that the teacher had apologised.
Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kalapara Police Station, said police had not received any formal complaint. He stated that an investigation would be conducted and legal action taken if a complaint was filed.
