Traffic Normalizes After 6 Hours Following Workers' Blockade on Kaliakair Highway
A tense scene on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakair with debris and blocked roads; police forces deployed with an APC vehicle to manage protesting workers; and long lines of gridlocked vehicles stranded on the highway.

In Kaliakair, Gazipur, a clash broke out between police and factory workers centering around the blockade of the Dhaka-Tangail highway. This brought vehicle movement to a halt across a 15-kilometer stretch of the highway, leaving general passengers stranded and distressed for nearly five hours.

On Saturday (October 31) at 2:00 PM, workers from several factories around the Pally Bidyut area of Kaliakair upazila, Gazipur, began protesting by blocking the Dhaka-Tangail highway. During this time, they blocked the road by placing sacks filled with dirt, wood, and bricks from road dividers, and lit fires using bamboo to close off the route. Facing worker protests, factory authorities declared holidays for 15 industrial factories from Konabari to Chandra. To ease the suffering of passengers and drivers, police requested the workers to clear the highway. However, the agitated workers continued their protest blockade. At one point, they set fires on the highway and began throwing bricks at the police. In response, police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades to control the situation. Although the angry workers dispersed, they continued counter-attacks from other directions, vandalizing police vehicles and other transport. As the situation went beyond control, an APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) and additional police forces arrived at the scene to try and normalize the situation. Currently, a tense and severe atmosphere prevails in areas including the Fire Service Chandra Trimohoni, Pally Bidyut Bus Stand, Ansar Academy, and Shafipur along the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

An eyewitness named Aziz stated that traffic congestion spread for several kilometers from Konabari towards Tangail. Similarly, long traffic jams formed from Tangail towards Gazipur.

Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Mohammad Amzad Hossain stated that workers are currently demonstrating by igniting fires at several points on the highway. Police are trying to pacify them through persuasion. Sound grenades were deployed to control the agitated workers and ensure the safety of life and property. Vehicle movement has now been halted.
