Industrial Police-1 arrested two members of an organized theft syndicate—Md. Sabuj Mia alias 'Meter Sabuj' (25) and Md. Maruf Molla (35), both from Chauhali upazila in Sirajganj—for allegedly stealing electric meters from various industrial institutions across Savar, Ashulia, and Dhamrai and returning them only after extorting ransom via bKash.

The arrests and details of the operation were announced on Saturday afternoon during a press briefing by Industrial Police-1 Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mominul Islam Bhuiyan at the unit's headquarters.

According to police, the gang targeted factories, placing polythene-wrapped notes containing a bKash number near the crime scenes to negotiate payouts. Following a case filed over a meter theft at The Acme Laboratories Ltd. in Dhamrai on August 5, Industrial Police utilized information technology and informants to track the suspects. They were intercepted on Friday near Ghorapir Mazar in Ashulia's Palashbari area while attempting to flee on a motorcycle, leading to the seizure of a Palli Biddut meter, two smartphones, and a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle. Police noted that Sabuj has six prior cases and Maruf has ten cases involving theft, extortion, and narcotics across various districts, while efforts continue to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate.
