Two tourists from Dhaka’s Khilgaon area went missing after descending into the Padma River to bathe near the 4th pillar of the Padma Bridge while on a pleasure trip.
The incident occurred on Monday (October 26) at around 1:45 PM. Immediately following the incident, the Mawa Naval Police initiated rescue operations.
To assist the naval police in their search for the missing individuals, a special diving team from the Fire Service arrived at the scene from Munshiganj and launched an extensive search operation underwater in the river.
The two missing individuals, identified as Maruf (22) and Rasel (40), had come to the Padma River on an office tour with their colleagues from Dhaka's Khilgaon area.
According to local sources, an 8-member group from Khilgaon visited the riverbank in Mawa, Munshiganj, to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Padma Bridge and its surrounding areas. From there, they stepped into the river near a shoal close to the 4th pillar of the Padma Bridge. At one point, when Maruf and Rasel entered the water, they were swept away by the strong current and deep waters. Realizing the situation, their accompanying colleagues and locals quickly informed the police and rescue teams.
Upon receiving the news, the Padma Mawa Naval Police promptly arrived at the scene with speedboats and initiated primary search operations in the river. Concurrently, the Coast Guard also commenced operations to search for them.
A source from the Mawa Naval Police outpost stated, "Right upon receiving the information, we arrived at the scene and launched rescue operations. The naval police, fire service, and Coast Guard are working jointly to rescue the missing persons swiftly."
The Fire Service reported that a special diving team from Munshiganj arrived at the site and is continuing full-scale underwater search operations in the river.
Meanwhile, the tragic disappearance of the two colleagues during what was meant to be a leisure trip has cast a pall of profound grief, anxiety, and concern over their fellow companions and families.
