Uncertainty has arisen surrounding an initiative by expatriates to organize free eye care treatment and cataract surgeries in Osmaninagar, Sylhet. Although the program is scheduled to take place on October 27 at Niz Burunga Bazar under Burunga union of the upazila, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer stated they are unaware of any official approval for the event.
According to the organizers' promotional leaflets, free eye treatment and cataract surgeries will be conducted by doctors from the Vash Eye Hospital. The leaflet also notes assistance from HRF and United Aid Expatriate Trust. October 26 was set as the final registration deadline.
Organizer Hafizur Rahman stated that a written application seeking permission to conduct the program had been submitted to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer. However, when asked by journalists to present the permission letter, he showed reluctance to provide it. Consequently, it could not be confirmed whether necessary clearance had been secured to execute the program within the stipulated timeframe.
On the other hand, relevant officials from the upazila administration and health department stated that they have no knowledge of such an event. As a result, questions have been raised regarding whether this public welfare initiative—aimed at providing critical free medical services like eye treatments and cataract surgeries—will proceed on schedule without proper authorization and coordination with the relevant authorities.
