Police have arrested a young man named Ihtiyar Ahmed Zobayer (22) in connection with a rape case filed over luring a young woman with a false promise of marriage in Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur, and subsequently sent him to jail through court.
According to police and case statements, the victim—a young woman from Hakimpur upazila—had a six-month romantic relationship with Zobayer, who promised to marry her with his family's consent.
On October 5, Zobayer took her to his home in Rajarampur Chowdhurypara area of Phulbari with his parents' knowledge, where he forced her into sexual relations under the guise of marriage.
When the victim informed his parents the next morning, they assured her of an arranged marriage, but Zobayer later dropped her off at home and refused to marry her, threatening and intimidating her when questioned. Following a formal complaint by the victim at Phulbari Police Station, officers arrested Zobayer, and Phulbari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam confirmed that he was sent to Dinajpur jail after a rape case was registered against him.
