3 Members of 'Honeytrap' Gang Arrested in Ashulia for Abduction and Extortion
Three members of a 'honeytrap' extortion gang arrested during a police drive in Ashulia.

Police have arrested three members of a "honeytrap" gang, including a woman and a 16-year-old minor, for allegedly using a female accomplice to lure, abduct, assault, and extort ransom from a man in Ashulia under Savar Upazila.

The gang allegedly extorted a total of Tk 24,300—including Tk 20,000 sent by the victim's family and Tk 4,300 already in his mobile banking account—under threat of death. Ashulia Police Station confirmed the arrests through a press release on Wednesday afternoon following a raid conducted around 5:30 AM at a residence in the Enayetpur area of Ashulia.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Khandakar Mehdi Hasan (24), Sabina Islam (20), and Shamim Mia (16). Police stated that operations are ongoing to arrest other accomplices involved in the crime and to recover the looted money and mobile phones.

According to police and the case statement, the victim, Parvez Biswas (34), rode out on his motorcycle from his residence in Savar on the evening of October 16. Around 6:30 PM, while returning beneath the Palli Bidyut overbridge in Ashulia, a woman requested a lift. After taking her on his motorcycle and reaching in front of the Al Noor Mosque in the Palli Bidyut area, five to six unidentified men forced him off the bike and beat him.

They then forcefully abducted him to a nearby bamboo grove, tied his hands and feet, and assaulted him again. Brandishing sharp weapons, the abductors demanded a ransom of Tk 5 lakh and threatened to kill him if he failed to pay.

When the victim was unable to pay on the spot, the captors contacted his family over the phone to demand ransom. Having no alternative, the family transferred Tk 20,000 to the Nagad mobile financial account on Parvez's phone. The kidnappers withdrew the entire Tk 24,300, including Tk 4,300 previously available in the account. They also snatched two mobile phones and a Bluetooth headset from Parvez before abandoning him on the road.

Following the incident, Parvez Biswas lodged a case (No. 99) with Ashulia Police Station. Acting on the complaint, police conducted a drive and arrested the three suspects.

According to the press release signed by Tarikul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, the arrests were made using information technology under the supervision and guidance of Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parveen. The arrestees have been forwarded to court, and drives are underway to apprehend the remaining gang members and recover the snatched belongings.
