
Two residents of Phulbari upazila in Kurigram have been taken into custody at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka with 80 gold bars hidden inside their shoes. The total weight of the recovered gold is approximately 9 kg 340 grams. The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) stated that the estimated market value of the seized gold is around 16.25 crore Taka.
On Monday (October 5) around 9:30 AM, acting on a tip-off, the gold was recovered during a raid on Emirates Airlines flight EK-0582 arriving in Dhaka from Dubai.
According to customs sources, the weight of each recovered gold bar is about 117 grams. The total weight of the 80 bars is approximately 9 kg 340 grams. Officials noted that the gold was cleverly concealed inside shoes.
The two individuals taken into custody are Emirates Airlines aircraft technical helper Md. Manik Mya and Mizanur Rahman. Among them, Manik Mya is reportedly a resident of Gajerkuti area near the border in Naodanga union of Kurigram's Phulbari upazila.
Relevant sources indicate that authorities are investigating who else is involved in this method of smuggling gold inside shoes, where the gold was brought from, and where it was supposed to be delivered. At the same time, investigations are underway to identify other members of the smuggling ring.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) officials stated that the process of taking legal action against those involved is currently underway. Investigations are ongoing to find out the source of the recovered gold and the entire network associated with it.
