An organized gang of snatchers looted Tk 5 lakh from a businessman in a cinematic style on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Kaliakair, Gazipur, in broad daylight on Sunday. The victim's son was injured during the incident.
According to the details, the victim withdrew Tk 5 lakh from the Sonali Bank Kaliakair branch at around 3:00 PM on Sunday (October 25). After the withdrawal, he, along with his son M. Touhid Rashid and his brother-in-law, started heading home in an auto-rickshaw.
As their auto-rickshaw crossed the river on the wrong side in the Hizlitoli Paschimpara area and reached the other side of the bridge, a white private car coming from the opposite direction (wrong side) intercepted them. Witnesses reported that there were 5 miscreants inside the car. Before they could understand what was happening, someone from the car reached out, grabbed the bag of money from the victim's hand, and gave it a violent yank. When the victim's son tried to stop them, his hand was cut and seriously injured. The miscreants then quickly fled along the Dhaka-Tangail highway with the bag, which contained Tk 5 lakh in cash and important bank documents. The victim's family later came to the police station after giving first aid to the injured son with the help of locals.
When asked about the incident, Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shahidul Islam said, "We have heard about the incident verbally. The victim has been asked to submit a written complaint. Upon receiving the complaint, we will analyze CCTV footage, share information with various highway checkposts, and launch an operation to arrest the snatchers. We have previously requested everyone to take police assistance after withdrawing large sums of money from banks."
Police suspect that the organized gang tracked and followed the victim directly from the bank before carrying out the robbery. Notably, incidents of snatching money from people withdrawing from banks and garment workers' salary cash on the Kaliakair section of the Dhaka-Tangail highway have increased at an alarming rate recently.
