An allegation has been raised against a schoolteacher for obstructing a journalist's professional duties and attempting to create a mob to attack him while he was gathering information at Bera Government Primary School in Saghata Upazila, Gaibandha.
On Tuesday (October 6) afternoon, Sohag Khondokar, the Saghata correspondent for Daily Naya Diganta, filed written complaints regarding the incident to the Upazila Education Officer, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Saghata, and the District Primary Education Officer of Gaibandha.
According to the complaint, acting on local allegations regarding irregular classes at Bera Government Primary School, journalist Sohag Khondokar visited the school on Monday (October 5) around 11:38 AM to verify the claims and collect information. Upon arrival, he spoke with a few local residents present in front of the school and, in their presence, observed the overall condition of the classrooms. He directly observed that there were no students present in any of the classrooms.
Later, upon entering the school's office room, he found assistant teacher Mosharaf Hossain (Milon) using a mobile phone. In the adjacent classroom, assistant teacher Rumi Madam was also seen watching a Hindi movie on her mobile phone. To verify the received allegations and preserve real-time visual evidence, the journalist captured the situation on camera. When he asked assistant teacher Rumi Madam whether she was a teacher at the school, assistant teacher Mosharaf Hossain (Milon) began speaking aggressively and shouting at him. The teacher repeatedly questioned whether the journalist had taken permission to enter the school and why he had recorded video of the assistant teacher. At one point, his behavior became highly agitated and aggressive, and he attempted to incite locals to attack the journalist, eventually gathering a crowd of 30 to 40 local people.
Journalist Sohag Khondokar subsequently managed to leave the scene with the help of the Upazila Education Officer and known local conscious citizens.
Upazila Primary Education Officer Abdullahel Kafi stated that appropriate legal action will be taken after investigating the complaint.
