The Special Response Battalion (SRB)-11 has arrested Rahim Sarkar (60), the prime accused in the murder of a woman named Rashida Begum, who was beaten to death due to prior enmity in Muradnagar, Comilla.
He was arrested around 12:30 AM on Saturday (October 10) from the Paduar Bazar area under Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md. Imrul Hasan, Acting Company Commander of SRB-11 (CPC-2, Comilla), confirmed the arrest through a press release on Sunday (October 11) morning.
The arrested, Rahim Sarkar, is the son of the late Abdul Baten Sarkar of Maheshpur village in Muradnagar Upazila.
According to the SRB-11 press release, Rashida Begum was severely beaten over prior enmity in Maheshpur village on the morning of June 25. She was rescued and rushed to the Muradnagar Upazila Health Complex, where she died while undergoing treatment.
Initial findings reveal that a long-standing dispute existed between two factions centered around Khorshed Alam and Rahim Sarkar of Maheshpur village. Earlier, Maowla Sarkar, a member of Rahim Sarkar's group, was hacked to death. Delwar Hossain, an accused in that murder case, and his wife, Rashida Begum, had been absconding following the incident.
The press release further stated that on the morning of June 25, Rashida Begum returned to her home. While leaving the house in a pickup van with domestic animals, her vehicle was intercepted. Subsequently, a group of 15 to 20 people, led by Rahim Sarkar, dragged her out of the vehicle and beat her mercilessly. When her two daughters stepped in to save their mother, they were also assaulted and injured.
Police later rescued the victims and brought them to Muradnagar Upazila Health Complex, where Rashida Begum succumbed to her injuries. Following the incident, the victim's daughter filed a murder case with Bangora Bazar Police Station.
SRB-11 stated that intelligence surveillance was intensified to apprehend those involved in the murder. Acting on information technology and a secret tip-off, an operation was conducted to arrest Rahim Sarkar.
The press release added that the arrested accused has been handed over to Bangora Bazar Police Station for further legal proceedings.
