Hollywood Feature 'Artificial' Chronicles OpenAI's Meteoric Rise; Andrew Garfield Stars as Sam Altman
Andrew Garfield starring as OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino's technological drama Artificial.

The dramatic rise and internal power struggles of ChatGPT creator OpenAI take center stage in the new Hollywood biographical drama Artificial, directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name). Hollywood actor Andrew Garfield stars as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, depicting the tech mogul's vision, rise, and the infamous November 2023 board coup where he was briefly ousted and reinstated within days.

The film made its international debut at the London Film Festival on Sunday (October 11, 2026) following its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. Written by Simon Rich, Artificial spans two decades of development, heavily highlighting the core ideological clash over artificial intelligence safety between Sam Altman and OpenAI co-founder/former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever (played by Yura Borisov).

Speaking to reporters, Andrew Garfield noted that his fascination with portraying Altman stemmed from a mix of curiosity and apprehension toward individuals wielding immense influence over humanity's technological future. The star-studded cast also features Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, Monica Barbaro as former CTO Mira Murati, Cooper Hoffman as Greg Brockman, and Mark Rylance as "Godfather of AI" Geoffrey Hinton. Distributed by Neon, Artificial is scheduled for nationwide US theatrical release on December 25, 2026.
