"Jail Is the Right Place for You": Supreme Court Sharpens Rebuke Against Bollywood Actor Rajpal Yadav in BDT 5-Crore Cheque Bounce Case
Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, who drew sharp criticism from the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday following his failure to clear outstanding debts by the court-ordered deadline.

The Supreme Court of India has severely reprimanded Bollywood comedy actor Rajpal Yadav for failing to repay a BDT 5-crore debt in a long-running cheque bouncing case, bluntly remarking that "jail is the right place for you."

The stern rebuke came during a hearing before a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. K. Mohanan. During a previous hearing on September 9, the top court had explicitly directed Yadav to deposit the outstanding sum of BDT 5 crore with creditors by October 5. However, upon missing the deadline, Yadav's legal counsel presented a demand draft for BDT 50 lakh, stating it was under bank processing. Expressing deep displeasure over the breach of commitment, the bench firmly rejected the partial submission. Justice Joymalya Bagchi noted that while creditors may hold substantial assets, the actor's repeated contractual breaches caused direct financial loss, adding that Yadav ought to know when to keep silent and that incarceration remains the appropriate recourse for such willful non-compliance. The dispute traces back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav secured a BDT 5-crore loan from Delhi-based firm Murli Projects to produce the feature film Aata Pata Laapata. Following the film's commercial failure, Yadav defaulted on repayments, prompting legal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
