Emmy-nominated actress Lena Headey, internationally renowned for her iconic portrayal of Cersei Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, has candidly discussed her early career struggles, the pressures of filming intimate scenes, and the systemic power dynamics within Hollywood.
In a recent interview with British newspaper The Telegraph, Headey reflected on her 20s and 30s, revealing that early in her career, the excitement of booking acting jobs often led her to endure deeply uncomfortable situations, including nude or intimate scenes, without questioning her personal boundaries. Looking back, she acknowledged that she lacked the confidence to set firm limits at the time. Addressing the widespread backlash she faced for using a body double during Cersei’s famous "Walk of Atonement" in the Season 5 finale of Game of Thrones, Headey explained that walking nude among 3,000 extras over several days would have forced her into a self-defensive mindset. Utilizing a body double combined with visual effects allowed her to dedicate her entire energy to delivering Cersei’s raw emotional vulnerability.
Headey also condemned workplace harassment and power abuse in the film industry. Recalling her past encounters with disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, she shared that after rejecting his improper advances, she was never offered another role in a Miramax production. She noted that standing up to powerful industry figures cost her numerous career opportunities for nearly a decade, underscoring the urgent need for structural safety and accountability in entertainment.
