International Podiatry Day 2026 was observed at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in the capital under the theme "Healthy Feet, Active Life – Podiatry in Foot Care."Organized by the Bangladesh Podiatry Society, the day featured a rally and a rally discussion emphasizing the importance of podiatric care in preventing foot diseases, managing diabetic foot complications, and preventing amputations.National Professor A. K. Azad Khan attended as the guest of honor, while BMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. F. M. Siddiqui served as the chief guest. Presided over by Bangladesh Podiatry Society President Prof. Sheikh Nurul Alam, the event was addressed by BIRDEM Director General Brig. Gen. Dr. Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Brig. Prof. Dr. Anjan Deb, Prof. Dr. Md. Faruque Pathan, and society founding General Secretary Dr. Morshed Uddin Akand, among others.Prof. S. M. G. Saklayen and renowned vascular surgeon Prof. G. M. Makbul Hossain presented key keynote papers outlining the critical role of podiatry. They highlighted that proper foot care is vital for daily mobility and quality of life, yet initial foot issues are often neglected. For diabetic patients, even minor injuries can lead to severe infections, ulcers, or limb loss if not treated promptly.Key speakers emphasized that comprehensive diabetic foot care requires a multidisciplinary approach involving podiatrists, diabetologists, vascular surgeons, nurses, and physiotherapists. They urged diabetic patients to undergo routine foot examinations, avoid walking barefoot, choose proper footwear, and seek immediate medical advice upon noticing any wounds or changes to avoid irreversible complications.
