Rescue workers carrying out recovery operations at the Toledo high-speed train crash site.

At least 68 people have died and dozens more were injured after two high-speed passenger trains collided in the Toledo region of central Spain along the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line.

The collision occurred shortly after 9:00 AM local time on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, in an area between the towns of Mora and Orgaz. According to reports from British news outlet The Independent and Spanish daily El País, the accident involved two high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo. A total of 544 passengers were aboard the two trains at the time of the impact, which caused at least two carriages to derail and plunge sideways into an adjacent ravine. Emergency rescue teams converged on the scene to extract trapped passengers and transport the wounded to nearby medical facilities.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed deep grief over the tragedy, extending condolences to the victims' families and solidarity with the injured. Declaring three days of official national mourning beginning Thursday, October 29, PM Sánchez pledged a thorough investigation to determine whether technical defects, operational signal failures, or human error caused the crash, assuring the public that any identified system deficiencies will be immediately rectified. High-speed rail traffic along the Madrid–Seville corridor remains temporarily suspended as salvage and forensic teams continue site operations.
