Top spokespersons of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)—Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka—along with several party volunteers were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday morning after breaching security barricades to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, defying official prohibitions.
The detentions were confirmed at approximately 10:00 AM by CJP organizer Abhijit Dipke via a post on X (formerly Twitter). Video footage released by Dipke showed Das and Ranka scaling the gates of Jantar Mantar while holding flags before being confronted by law enforcement personnel. As police moved in to restrain the group, scuffles broke out, with protesters shouting slogans including "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Inquilab Zindabad" before being taken into custody.
The high-voltage protest comes amidst growing opposition outrage against the Union Government's 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) electoral roll process, with both the opposition INDIA bloc and CJP demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police had formally banned gatherings at Jantar Mantar under central directives, designating Ramlila Maidan, Burari Maidan, and the East Delhi CBD Ground as the only sanctioned protest venues. Heavy police cordons have been stationed around Jantar Mantar since October 10, following widespread weekend detentions of opposition activists across the capital.
