Political tensions gripped India on Sunday (October 11, 2026) as New Delhi faced intense demonstrations and heavy security barricades over demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi traveled to Chennai to inaugurate major infrastructure projects.

While thousands of protesters from the Cockroach Party—including top leader Abhijit Dhibar—were detained by police amidst the capital's lockdown, courts ordered the release of key leaders by Sunday morning.

Following the crackdown, the party announced plans to continue its indefinite agitation until CEC Gyanesh Kumar steps down. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Chennai, where he jointly inaugurated the Phase 2 Chennai Metro stretch (Poonamallee-Vadapalani line) alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C.

Joseph Vijay. Built at an estimated cost of INR 4,900 crore, Modi and Chief Minister Vijay took a short metro ride between Porur Bypass and Poonamallee Bypass stations, alongside launching supplementary highway projects worth thousands of crores.
