Delhi Police De-notifies Jantar Mantar as Designated Protest Site, Designates Three Alternative Grounds
Security forces and barricades deployed near Jantar Mantar in New Delhi following the police order de-notifying the site.

The Delhi Police has officially de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, effectively banning demonstrations and public gatherings at the iconic central New Delhi location.

In a written directive issued on Monday (October 12, 2026) bearing the signature of Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, the previous Standing Order dated April 28, 2022, which recognized Jantar Mantar as a protest venue, was partially modified and superseded. The police administration has designated three alternative locations for public demonstrations: Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and East Delhi's CBD Ground. According to the notification, separate standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing gatherings at these new sites will be released shortly.

The decision follows intense recent political mobilization and mass protests led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and opposition factions demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, which prompted heavy security clampdowns and thousands of detentions across the capital. Legal experts note that the administrative shift also aligns with recent observations from Supreme Court benches regarding traffic congestion and infrastructure limitations at the central Jantar Mantar corridor.
