139 Migrants Dead and 84 Missing After Overcrowded Boat Capsizes Off Djibouti Coast Near Bab al-Mandeb
Rescue personnel and humanitarian workers responding to the migrant shipwreck off the coast of Djibouti.

At least 139 migrants, including 15 children, have lost their lives and another 84 remain missing after an overcrowded boat carrying approximately 305 people capsized off the coast of Djibouti near the Bab al-Mandeb strait.

According to the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM), citing survivor accounts, the vessel went down during the night of October 8–9. The passengers were all Ethiopian nationals attempting to cross the perilous maritime corridor toward Yemen with the ultimate goal of reaching Saudi Arabia. More than 80 people were rescued by the Djibouti Coastguard, while search and recovery operations continue for those still unaccounted for.

IOM Djibouti Mission Chief Alexandre Cauchois expressed deep grief over the disaster, emphasizing the extreme dangers migrants face along this route despite ongoing regional conflicts and maritime instability.
