KATHMANDU — Bangladesh and Nepal signed a landmark power trade agreement under which 200MW of clean hydropower will flow to Dhaka from 2027 via Indian transmission lines — the first trilateral energy deal in South Asia.
The 25-year agreement prices electricity at under 7 US cents per unit, far cheaper than oil-fired rental plants. Officials say it could save $200 million annually and cut 1.2 million tonnes of carbon.
'The Himalayas' rivers will light Bengal's homes. This is what neighbours are for,' Nepal's energy minister said at the signing. A second phase for 500MW is already under negotiation.
