French High School Protests Escalate Over Education Budget Cuts, Clashes Erupt Nationwide
High school students and law enforcement clash in France as nationwide protests against education budget cuts continue.

Nationwide high school student demonstrations demanding adequate classroom infrastructure, essential educational materials, and increased funding turned violent across France on Friday (October 2, 2026), leading authorities to shutter approximately 400 secondary schools.

French riot police clashed with teenage demonstrators in several major cities. In Strasbourg, security forces deployed tear gas to disperse crowds, while protesters in Marseille targeted police lines with fireworks, and trash containers were set ablaze near school gates in Rennes and Lille. Intermittent blockades and standoffs also disrupted learning institutions across Paris. The unrest stems from widespread dissatisfaction with the Emmanuel Macron administration's recent fiscal budget cuts, which hit the education sector at a time when classrooms face chronic over-crowding and acute resource shortages. With key presidential elections approaching in six months, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed that nearly 2,000 demonstrators—mostly teenagers—have been detained over the past week. Darmanin declared that parents of minors engaging in vandalism should be held financially liable for damages, while Education Minister Édouard Geffray urged parents to keep students at home to curb escalating tensions.
